Gaja Sperrs Langhe Nebbiolo Barolo 2011

RM 1498

The 2011 Gaja Sperss Langhe Nebbiolo (formerly and often referred to as Barolo Sperss) is a masterful expression of Serralunga d’Alba terroir, crafted by one of Italy’s most iconic producers, Angelo Gaja. The name “Sperss” (pronounced shperss) means “nostalgia” in the local Piedmontese dialect, representing the Gaja family’s return to producing Barolo after a long hiatus.

Comprised of approximately 94% Nebbiolo and 6% Barbera, the wine undergoes a 3-week fermentation in stainless steel, followed by 12 months in barriques and 12 months in large oak casks. Despite 2011 being a warm, dry summer, Gaja managed the vintage by moving the bottling date forward to preserve freshness and avoid overripe sensations, resulting in a vibrant, “fresh and tonic” wine. The wine is velvety, full-bodied featuring dark fruits, kirsch, cassis, leather, balsam herb, and white truffle. The palate is marked by firm, well-integrated tannins, offering a long, powerful finish.

“An intense red, which stays fresh and long, showing balance overall” ~ Wine Spectator 93 pts
