100 Points Sauternes: Chateau Rieussec 2001

A rare, remarkable Sauternes: THE PERFECT 100 POINTS Sauternes

Château Rieussec Sauternes 2001

This bottle of pure, golden liquid received not only ONE but TWO PERFECT scores from Wine Spectator and James Suckling respectively with Wine Advocate following closely with 99 Points. The ratings alone are astounding but we are left wondering, what does it taste like

The Wine

Almonds, honey, orange blossoms and earth.  Golden and green-tinged with a nose of nectar, pears, apples, orange blossoms and peaches –with roasted mixed nuts of walnuts, almonds and pistachios.  Mouth-coating with ripe apricots, great acids and egg-white fluffiness on the long, clean finish, surprisingly light on its feet.

There is no wine sweeter than Sauternes, and we mean that literally. Sauternes, from the Bordeaux region of France, is the world’s greatest sweet wine.  While most of the world’s sweet wines are liquid sugar bombs, Sauternes is not.  Think about the ripest, freshest, juiciest piece of fruit you’ve ever tasted, balanced with some tartness and good acidity to make this wine genuinely exciting.

It’s like tasting the sun, with a gleaming richness to it.  It tastes golden.  It’s smooth and the sweetness bursts in your mouth then surprises you with a clean, bracing finish – The total package, the perfect one.

Perfection Review

James Suckling

“This is a crazy wine! It’s sweet, but not sugary. Mushrooms, furniture wax, spices then dried oranges, lemons, pineapples, and just a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied, with great density and power, yet balanced and refined. So amazing, but give this five to six years still. Pull the cork in 2016.” ~ 100 Points

“Like lemon curd on the nose, turning to honey and caramel. Full-bodied and very sweet, with fantastic concentration of ripe and botrytized fruit, yet balanced and refined. Electric acidity. Lasts for minutes on the palate. This is absolutely mind-blowing. This is the greatest young Sauternes I have ever tasted.” ~ 100 Points

Made only in Exceptional Vintages | 95 Points – Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Reserve 2004

95 Points: Made only in Exceptional Years| Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Reserve 2004

Two Hands Wines

Wild Duck Creek is a small family-run winery situated 8km west of Heathcote in Victoria, where David (aka ‘Duck’) and Diana Anderson planted the first vines in 1979. Traditional winemaking methods including hand-picking, open fermentationhand-plungingbasket-pressing, and long-term barrel-ageingare fostered, as is the use biodynamic principles on its own vineyards. The Andersons remain adamant however, that it’s still the vineyard and site selection especially, that produce the great wines of Wild Duck Creek.

The Wine

Shiraz Reserve is a wine of great depth and complexity. Only pristine fruit from its three best Shiraz sites go into this wine. Typically taken from ultra-low yielding patches making up only 1,500 litres per hectare, Shiraz Reserve offers a wine of immense intensity without the heaviness typically associated with such a wine. Matured in predominately new French oak for 26 months prior to bottling, Shiraz Reserve is a wine crafted to be consumed up to 25 years after its vintage.

When Wild Duck Creek didn’t make enough wines and pulled out of the US market, there were an army of wailing WDC admirers – namely wine writers, high-end restaurateurs and fine wine retailers who couldn’t get enough of the USD300 per bottle Shiraz. One such admirer was the team at the much-read Wine Advocate….

The 2004 Shiraz Reserve was aged in 100% new French oak hogsheads for 20 months. The alcohol is a mere 15.5%, but the wine is gorgeously pure revealing a quintessential black raspberry and creme de cassis purity and richness that must be smelled, tasted, and evaluated to be believed. Huge extract, massive tannin, and a stunningly long, 45 second plus finish suggest this impeccably well-balanced Shiraz will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and last for 15 or more.” ~ Wine Advocate 95 Points

Michael Twelftree

Deep purple-red; rich and luscious; very ripe fruit with blackberry confit flavours; soft tannins, and it’s easy to see why it has such appeal in the US. This is not to denigrate its appeal in Australia, either.

Stunning wine, drinking gorgeously at 13 years old. Heathcote is renowned for its quality & this ably demonstrates all the reasons why. There’s a distinct ripeness of fruit typical of Australian Shiraz, but somehow this wine remains balanced & fresh in spite of its 13 years – characteristics of a great wine.

Pure Quality.

Pronounced aroma intensity. Black cherries, cassis, kirsch. Leather, meat & prune. Not produced every year, this wine represents the best fruit from the best years. NOT USD300….

Two Hands Winery’s Flagship Wine | 98 Points – Ares Shiraz 2005

Two Hands Wines

Two Hands was founded in 1999 by Michael Twelftree. Two Hands was set up with the intention of showcasing the diversity of Australian Shiraz by highlighting regional characteristics and allowing the fruit to be the primary feature of the wines. Michael personally guides the wines through the viticulture and winemaking process and the name Two Hands, refers to the very intimate and personal approach taken with each parcel of grapes.

That approach has brought global recognition, Two Hands was named in theWine Spectator’s annual Top 100 for the 11th timean honor no other winery has achieved.

The Wine

We present the ultimate wine from Two Hands Winery, their flagship wine – the Ares Shiraz 2005 which scored a mighty 98 points from Wine Spectator!

“A majestic wine that’s tremendously aromatic and dense in texture, but amazingly refined. Delineates its ripe plum, blueberry and currant flavors with precision, shading the fruit with nuances of coffee and dark chocolate, hinting at smoke and licorice as the finish laps at the palate like the shore of a deep lake. Shiraz. Best from 2010 through 2020.” – Wine Spectator

Each year, every one of the 1,500 barrels of Shiraz is tasted in the search for the very finest cuvée to represent Ares, the pinnacle of Two Hand’s Shiraz production. The handful of barrels that make it through are matured for 24 months in new and one year old French oak, and re-tasted again and again to ensure only the best make the final blend. A statuesque, powerful and deeply flavoured wine that combines elegance and vivacity.

Michael Twelftree

Winemaking for me is a labour of love, a passion, and a craft.  I have walked every vineyard, made every picking decision and tasted every individual barrel of each wine we’ve ever produced. I can’t imagine there are too many winery owners around the world that take the pursuit of quality that personally

All great wines are produced from the foolproof formula of investing a great deal of effort and time, and the Two Hands Ares Shiraz is the pinnacle output of Michael Twelftree’s sweat and blood

Aside from Wine Spectator, Ares Shiraz 2005 also earned a full round of applause from other critics with Robert Parker dishing out 95 points and Stephen Tanzer similarly giving it 95 Points, and describing the length of the finish with high praise:

“…outrageously scented nose combines pungent floral, spice and mineral tones with kirsch, blackcurrant… excellent integration of oak, tannin and enough hidden structure to evolve for more than a decade… can you call it a finish when it doesn’t stop?”.
